Silence of a Tree was inspired by what I experienced on a drive through Poudre Canyon the summer after the destructive Cameron Peak fire. The many black tree "skeletons" made for an eerie landscape that was interrupted by new growth; a reminder of how effectively Mother Nature was already healing the breathtakingly beautiful canyon. Gloria Campbell Artist Statement Early in my career, a writer friend used one word to describe my art: PALIMPSEST. [ˈpaləm(p)ˌsest] n. 1. a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain. 2. something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. I immediately embraced palimpsest as “my” word as well as my process. I love mixing colors, mixing papers, mixing media, and, admittedly mixing metaphors, to create abstract paintings that have been "layered up" to capture a mood, a moment, an object, or an idea while still leaving.
